Position Overview
The Unified Communications (UC) Systems Engineer applies a systems engineering methodology to the design, integration, installation, interoperability, and maintenance of Unified Communications technologies. These technologies include telephony, video teleconferencing (VTC), chat platforms, IPTV, digital signage, mass notification systems, land mobile radio (LMR), audio-visual meeting management (AVMM), and Skype solutions.
In addition to supporting the implementation and sustainment of these systems, the UC Systems Engineer is responsible for integrating commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products and interfaces into both developmental and operational Unified Communications environments to ensure reliable, scalable, and interoperable solutions.

Position Overview
The Unified Communications (UC) Systems Engineer applies a systems engineering methodology to the design, integration, installation, interoperability, and maintenance of Unified Communications technologies. Responsibilities
- Prepare operational guides
- Train Government customers in proper use of UC systems
- Provide support for implementation, troubleshooting and maintenance of UC systems
- Provide Tier 1 (Help Desk) problem identification, diagnosis and resolution of problems
- Manage the daily activities of configuration and operation of UC systems
- Provide assistance to users in accessing and using UC systems
- Documents hardware software configuration management processes and procedures
- Coordinate hardware installations across multiple sites
- Maintain and develop the environment for hardware and software product build, staging, testing and integration
- Apply concepts and define and implement hardware and software configuration management processes and procedures, such as creating product build scripts and procedures, and integrate those scripts with the hardware and software build process
- Conduct analysis on UC systems by ensuring designs are cost efficient, able to be integrated, and reliable
- Communicate with the other engineering personnel to coordinate the interrelated design and assure project completion
- Designs, documents, and develops code for programmable devices
- Analyze complex hardware systems, hardware design, architecture, network design and other technical hardware issues
- Perform testing on equipment
- Provide hardware maintenance support, both preventative and remedial
- Deploy, install, and implement UC at Continental United States (CONUS) and Outside Continental United States (OCONUS)
- Conduct site surveys
- Streamline control system interfaces to be fully automated and maximizes user experience
- Configure control systems, communications devices and peripheral equipment
- Develop costing proposals for the program manager
- Perform telecommunications punch block installation and maintenance for serial copper data paths
- Interpret drawings, specifications, and other related documents
- Design a wide variety of UC solutions including multi-level security systems, enterprise level collaboration systems, conference rooms, classrooms, command centers, auditoriums, digital signage, and streaming
- Acts as equipment custodian and performs inventory asset management and accountability functions
- Assist in defining and implementing hardware and software configuration management processes and procedures, such as creating product build scripts and procedures, and integrating those scripts with the hardware and software build process
- Interpret facility and UC drawings from architects and facilities program managers
- Organize and directs hardware and software version control processes and improve and maintain existing products
- Provide technical leadership to level 1 and level 2 contractor engineers
- Act as internal consultant providing technical guidance on complex projects
- Organize and direct hardware installations
- Develop UC installation schedules based upon equipment delivery, integration complexity, and customer priorities
- Prepare drawings documenting as-built configurations
- Organize and direct teams to address critical system failures
- Provides identification/fixing of problems within existing systems, design/implementation of new systems and enhancement of existing systems
- Participates in analysis, design and new construction of next generation IT systems
- Responsible for understanding the needs of the customers and the realities of commercially available IT products and creating requirements that will allow implementation by the development team
- Technical Master’s Degree and Six (6) years’ experience or Associates Degree and Ten (10) years of experience
- In lieu of an Associate’s Degree, an additional two (2) years’ experience is required for each area identified above
- Must have solid technical background with a focus on IT systems
Desired Skills
- Experience as a systems engineer, with telecommunication, engineering, computer networking, computer science, electronics or communications on one or more IT platforms is preferred
- A Degree in Computer Science, Computer Networking or Engineering, Electronics, Risk Management or a directly related field is required
